Bean Sprout Hairpins - China’s Latest Fashion Sensation.

A new fashion trend has sprung up in China and it’s all the rage. In Beijing, folks of all ages are rocking bean sprout hairpins. From tourists to locals, everyone is getting in on the fun of clipping these faux plants on their heads, but no one seems to know why, aside from the fact that it seems like good times.
Sold mostly by street vendors in areas that are populated mostly by tourists, these unique hairpins are made of plastic flowers and leaves. They mostly go for less than a U.S. dollar—79 cents to be exact, according to CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/14/asia/china-sprout-hair-clips-trend/)—so it’s easy to see why they’re so darn difficult to pass on. And, get this, guys are sporting the bean sprout hair accessory, too!
A local street vender by the name, Zhou Delai, told CNN reporters that the trend began in late August, but he’s not sure where it came from. Wherever it originated from, the rise in popularity of the blossoming trend has Delai selling 200 pins every three to four hours.
Since we live in such technologically advanced times, the trend has swarmed social media as well. With a simple search of the hashtag #豆芽, which translates to bean sprout according to Google Translator (because which other source would one use to translate Chinese to English), you’ll find numerous photos of people happily wearing their artificial floral hair accessories. Even kittens and puppies are wearing them!
